Building a Career in Commercial HVAC & Plumbing: Why Skilled Trades Matter More Than Ever

For those who value hands-on work and long-term stability, the skilled trades offer compelling career opportunities. Trade employers across America are actively hiring, offering competitive wages, accelerated training programs, and signing bonuses to fill critical roles in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related fields.

Several factors are driving this demand: nearly one-third of the skilled workforce is over 50 and nearing retirement, hands-on repair and installation work cannot be automated or outsourced, and significant investment in infrastructure and building systems is creating sustained demand. Skilled tradespeople today enjoy competitive pay, strong benefits, and the freedom to choose employers who value their expertise.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Federal labor data confirms the opportunity. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers (HVAC technicians) will grow 8% from 2024 to 2034, adding approximately 40,100 job openings per year. Employment of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters is projected to grow 4% over the same period, with about 44,000 annual job openings.

These trades offer competitive median wages—$62,970 for plumbers in 2024—and provide recession-resistant employment. Unlike jobs vulnerable to outsourcing or automation, you cannot remotely fix a malfunctioning chiller or install commercial piping systems from overseas.

The Role of HVAC in Back-to-School Season

As buses roll through towns like Timberville, Elkton, and Bridgewater, schools across the Shenandoah Valley are welcoming students back. Behind the scenes, reliable HVAC systems play a bigger role in education than many people realize.

Indoor air quality directly affects student performance and teacher comfort. When systems are neglected, classrooms can become stuffy, humid, or even unhealthy. With more attention than ever on air circulation, especially since the pandemic, schools need HVAC systems they can count on.

September is also the time when cooling loads are still present during warmer afternoons, but mornings can be chilly. That means schools in Harrisonburg or even further east in Winchester need systems that transition seamlessly between cooling and heating.

At Young’s Mechanical Solutions, we’ve worked with educational facilities throughout Virginia and eastern West Virginia to ensure classrooms remain comfortable and safe. Our team provides routine maintenance, energy-efficient upgrades, and even custom ductwork fabrication to keep systems running at peak performance.

A dependable HVAC system isn’t just about comfort—it’s about creating an environment where learning thrives. From elementary schools in Broadway to university buildings in Harrisonburg, we’re here to support the Valley’s education community.

From Fabrication to Installation: How Custom Ductwork Speeds Up Fall Projects

Construction projects tend to pick up in the fall as contractors race to complete work before winter slows things down. One of the keys to keeping those projects on schedule? Custom duct work.

At Young’s Mechanical Solutions, we fabricate duct work right here in Harrisonburg. Our skilled sheet metal crews use modern equipment—including a CNC plasma cutting table—to produce precise, labeled pieces ready for installation. This reduces delays on job sites from Staunton to Winchester and across into Martinsburg, WV.

For general contractors, that means fewer headaches. Instead of waiting for out-of-town shipments or dealing with mismatched components, our ductwork is made locally, to spec, and delivered quickly. Each piece is labeled, making installation smoother and ensuring the right component ends up in the right place.

Fall is a busy time for construction in the Shenandoah Valley, whether it’s a new office building in Bridgewater or a renovation in Harrisonburg. Having a reliable mechanical partner who can handle both fabrication and installation helps projects stay on budget and on time.

If your fall project needs a mechanical contractor that can provide both craftsmanship and speed, Young’s Mechanical Solutions is ready to help. Contact us today, and let’s get your project wrapped up before winter weather hits.

Employee Spotlight On Danny!

Danny Altland Employee Spotlight

Young’s Mechanical is proud to feature Daniel Altland as our employee spotlight! Danny has been with Young’s Mechanical since the company was founded and is a supervisor of one of our sheet metal crews.  I asked Danny to share a few things about himself and why he chooses to be a part of the YMS team.  Danny shared that some of his greatest accomplishments are the quality of work and the owners having the trust in him to do what he does. He also has learned more about things outside of his trade labor by working in a smaller company.  He feels this additional knowledge helps him be a better asset to the company and to the other team members.  The reason he decided to work for YMS was because of the owners.  Danny feels as though he is treated as a value to company rather than just a number.  When asked what he liked most about the environment and culture of Young’s Mechanical, his answer was trust!  In Danny’s spare time, he enjoys spending time with his new grandsons and a fun fact about Danny is that Robert E. Lee was his great uncle x5!  Danny also shared that ‘good values’ is what he would say to describe the mission of Young’s Mechanical.

Thank you, Danny, for your hard work each day!  We are blessed to have you as part of our family!!

Why Fall is the Best Time to Schedule Commercial HVAC Upgrades

As summer winds down in the Shenandoah Valley, many businesses are shifting gears for the cooler months ahead. September is often overlooked when it comes to HVAC planning, but it’s actually the perfect time to schedule system upgrades.

Why? For one, the demand for heating hasn’t fully kicked in yet. That means your business—whether it’s an office in Harrisonburg, a retail shop in Staunton, or a manufacturing facility in Bridgewater—can make improvements with minimal disruption. Fall is the “shoulder season” for HVAC contractors, so scheduling is easier and projects can be completed before winter sets in.

Upgrading during fall also means your system is prepared to handle the first cold snaps that often surprise us in the Valley by late October. From Broadway to Winchester, no business owner wants their staff or customers bundled up indoors because the heat failed.

At Young’s Mechanical Solutions, we specialize in helping businesses make smart upgrades, whether it’s replacing outdated rooftop units, modernizing controls, or fabricating new ductwork in our shop. Investing in improvements now can also lower utility bills this winter—something every business in Virginia and eastern West Virginia can appreciate.

If your system has been limping along through the summer, don’t wait for it to fail when you need it most. Give our Harrisonburg office a call, and let’s make sure your building is ready for the months ahead.

How Commercial Kitchens and Breweries Can Get Ready for Cooler Weather

Restaurants, breweries, and commercial kitchens are cornerstones of the Shenandoah Valley economy. From breweries in Lexington and Waynesboro to restaurants in Harrisonburg and Martinsburg, each one relies on a dependable HVAC system to keep operations running smoothly.

As cooler weather approaches, kitchens and brewing facilities face unique challenges. Proper ventilation is critical to keep air moving and equipment running safely. Breweries, for example, produce heat and moisture during the brewing process, and without balanced HVAC, that moisture can become a problem when colder air sets in.

For restaurants, fall is an ideal time to check both front-of-house comfort and back-of-house ventilation. Nobody wants diners in Staunton or Winchester enjoying a fall menu while sitting under a drafty vent—or worse, smelling kitchen exhaust.

At Young’s Mechanical Solutions, we work closely with kitchens and breweries to prepare their systems for seasonal changes. That might mean cleaning and balancing ventilation, installing upgraded controls, or simply performing preventive maintenance so equipment doesn’t quit on a busy Friday night.

Cooler weather also brings lower energy demand. That makes fall a cost-effective time for businesses to tackle HVAC improvements before the holiday rush.

Whether you run a café in Broadway or a brewery in Charlottesville, we can help keep your facility comfortable, safe, and efficient this fall.

Cutting-Edge Precision: Young’s Mechanical Adds CNC Plasma Table to Boost Ductwork Fabrication

At Young’s Mechanical Solutions, we’re always looking for ways to improve the speed, precision, and efficiency of the services we provide to our customers across Harrisonburg, the Shenandoah Valley, and beyond. Our latest investment in innovation is a new CNC plasma cutting table, a state-of-the-art tool that will transform how we fabricate sheet metal ductwork for commercial HVAC projects.

What This Means for Our Customers

This new machine allows us to cut the sheet metal that becomes ductwork with unmatched accuracy and efficiency. Every piece we fabricate is now labeled for easy installation, ensuring that the right piece goes in the right place—saving time on-site and reducing errors.

Even better, the plasma table can cut steel up to ¼” thick, giving us the flexibility to handle not just ductwork but also other specialty fabrication needs when projects call for it. The result: faster turnaround times, more precise parts, and a smoother installation process for our clients.

How the CNC Plasma Table Works

A plasma table uses a computer-controlled torch to cut conductive metals like steel and aluminum. By directing a stream of ionized gas (plasma) along a programmed path, it produces clean, consistent cuts every time. The process begins with a CAD design, which is converted into a tool path the machine follows. From there, the CNC system controls every detail—torch height, speed, and movement—ensuring efficiency and accuracy.

Key benefits include:

  • Speed & Efficiency: Cuts metal parts quickly to keep projects moving.

  • Precision & Accuracy: Produces repeatable, high-quality cuts for reliable results.

  • Versatility: Can handle ductwork and heavier steel components.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Reduces waste and saves labor on installations.

Innovation That Supports Our Mission

From our shop in Harrisonburg, our skilled team already fabricates ductwork and piping for projects across Virginia and West Virginia. Adding this CNC plasma table is one more way we’re investing in technology that supports our mission—to deliver commercial HVAC and plumbing solutions that are efficient, precise, and built to last.
